Get a digital postcard every Tuesday

Every week, you’ll get a mixed bag of as-is observations in your inbox; the reported yays and the honest nays from the perspective of a solopreneur of colour, who is no longer waiting to be picked, viewed, or accepted as “relevant” or “relatable” to gatekeepers.

Filed from a hotdesk in Malaysia — moving between the outdoors at mosquito hour to a makeshift Zoom corner — find out what goes on beyond the pages of this independent food culture magazine.

Sound bites / field notes written by myself, Dee May, founder of Plates magazine, a collectable print magazine that uses food as a conversation starter — for meatier issues.

More about Plates — the physical magazine

I started Plates in 2018 with the idea of using food to begin conversations about social justice, human rights, gender and intangible cultures. I’m now editing the fourth issue, Vol.4: Seeds from a Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

If you’re keen to support independent print journalism, Vol.1: Rice, Vol.2: Durian and Vol.3: Water are available at selected independent bookstores in the US, Italy, Sweden, Singapore and Malaysia as well as on the main website.

(P/S I process all orders on my own, so it would be amazing to see familiar and new names come through!)
