Many things have surfaced in the past fortnight alone. Instead of turning this postcard into a rant, I want to pose a question along with a proposal today.
The question:
What have you read in the past month that has irked you? Perhaps an article that left you feeling unsure about “how” to feel? A post by a public figure that kept you awake?A headline that stoked a simmering suspicion?
The proposal:
Now, sit with that feeling. (Phones left on flight mode.) Observe. Why does it feel uncomfortable to read those words? Is it because they’re untrue, offensive, or different from your world view?
Then, if you’re up for it, write your version of that subject matter. It could be in a journal. On your private feed. On a public platform.
As you write, consider: What was missing from the initial narrative that left you unsettled? How would you make it better? What does “better” look/sound/feel like?
This week, I’m
working on: reaching out to the people who matter
watching: Milo Murphy’s Law (I would highly recommend this to Phineas & Ferb fans)
Plates is an independent print magazine that uses food as a conversation starter and offers alternatives to mainstream food culture narratives. Plates is ad-free and relies entirely on the investment of readers, who choose to go beyond the gatekeepers. Vol.4: Seeds is out now. All four collectible issues are available for purchase on the website, which I manage end-to-end.
If you enjoyed reading this postcard, feel free to forward it to a friend; leave a comment; or, if you’ve been meaning to, but haven’t quite gotten around to it, grab a plate and introduce yourself here. Sporadic, but intentional, updates on IG@platesmagazine. Thanks for being here. See you next week.
